About This Project
An 80m² residential lawn in Chelmsford transformed in a single day — even in cold winter conditions — from a patchy, unusable garden into a lush, low-maintenance artificial lawn.
This project is a great example of what Essex Artificial Grass can achieve regardless of the season. The client had a garden that was patchy and muddy, becoming virtually unusable over the winter months. They wanted a clean, durable solution that would look great all year round and require minimal upkeep.
The installation followed our full, meticulous ground preparation process. The existing lawn was excavated and cleared. A geotextile weed membrane was laid at soil level to eliminate any weed growth before around 75–100mm of MOT Type One sub-base was levelled across the full area, along with a concrete fillet around the perimeter to fix the lawn securely. Two hand screeds of 0–5mm granite dust were then applied to create a completely flat, stable base — essential for a flawless finish.

Site Assessment
Patchy, muddy lawn assessed and cleared — unusable over winter months and in need of a permanent solution.
Excavation
Existing soil excavated and removed. Geotextile weed membrane laid at soil level to prevent any future weed growth.
Sub-Base
75–100mm of MOT Type One levelled and compacted across the full area, with a concrete fillet installed around the perimeter for secure fixing.
Granite Dust
Two hand screeds of 0–5mm granite dust applied to achieve a completely flat, smooth base ready for the artificial lawn.
