How to Choose the Best Fake Grass for Dogs

When looking to choose the best artificial grass for a garden, there are a couple of things pet owners should think about: pile height and pile density.

Let’s look at pile height first, which simply refers to the height of each strand of artificial grass. It is generally the case that the shorter the pile, the more hard-wearing it will be, therefore those with energetic dogs should go for something slightly shorter, such as our Supreme 35mm product.

Those with less energetic dogs won’t need to worry about the pile height though, as all grass will withstand normal use from humans and pets alike.

Pile density refers to how many stitches there are per square metre. We would generally recommend artificial grass with a higher density to those with dogs, as this will be able to cope with heavy use.

The Advantages of Artificial Grass for Pet Owners

There are loads of different advantages when it comes to installing artificial grass in a garden often used by a dog.

The biggest for many is this though: no muddy paws splattered all over the kitchen floor when man’s best friend comes in from the garden.

It’s also the case that installing artificial grass will prevent your lawn from being ruined. Dog owners know that urine, faeces and scrapping can all damage real grass significantly, however you won’t find this problem with artificial grass though, which will stay looking perfect all year round. Unfortunately, we can’t give the same guarantee for your flowerbeds though!

It is also incredibly easy to clean artificial grass after it’s been used as a toilet by a dog. You’ll be able to pick the faeces up as normal, without the accompanying handful of grass and mud that often makes an appearance when tidying real lawns. You can then just wash down the grass every so often with a hosepipe.

Finally, you’ll find that your pets love artificial grass as much as real grass. In fact, they won’t even be able to tell the difference, as the artificial turf we use is soft and realistic. So, there’s no need to worry that artificial grass will affect the happiness of your dog or other pet.

Artificial Grass for Pets

Is Artificial Grass Good for Dogs / Pets?

Yes – there is nothing to be concerned about when it comes to artificial grass and pets. A long time ago, there were some types of fake grass that had harmful substances in them, however this is no longer the case.

We can guarantee that every fake grass product we sell will leave your pets in fine health, able to enjoy the outdoors as they did before.

You’ll also find that there will be no need to use dangerous substances on your grass, such as weed killers. These substances can be exceptionally harmful to dogs, cats and other pets, often putting owners in a tough spot.

Do they use weed killer and risk their pet’s health, or do they not and leave the garden to become overgrown with weeds? This isn’t a decision you’ll have to make when you choose fake grass.

Dogs and Artificial Grass: Care Tips

As already stated, dogs and other pets shouldn’t damage your artificial grass in any way. There are a few things you’ll need to do in order to keep your fake grass looking perfect though – don’t worry, it’s nowhere near as much work as mowing the lawn every weekend!

Firstly, we’d advise that you wash your artificial lawn down regularly, just by spraying it with water from a hosepipe. If you find that your animals have left a smell on the grass, just mix in a little washing up liquid to the mixture. Alternatively, you’ll be able to find specialist artificial grass cleaner online.

Secondly, we would recommend using a disinfectant on your grass too, which can be added to the mixture when hosing the garden down. While you’ll be able to pick up 99% of what your pet deposits, small amounts will be left, and you don’t really want your kids playing there. There are specific disinfectants out there designed to deal with dog mess and urine.

Thirdly, over time, your pets – as well as any human users – will flatten down the grass. This is not a permanent problem though. Instead, just take a brush and brush the strands back up. This isn’t too hard to do, and you don’t need to do it too often. Instead, just get the brush out when you feel like sprucing up your grass slightly.

Overall, however, you should only find yourself spending a few minutes every month caring for your artificial grass. You can spend the rest of the time relaxing in the sun, watching as your furry friends enjoy themselves on your newly installed artificial lawn!
